Fraxinus excelsior, known as the ash, or European ash or common ash to distinguish it from other types of ash, is a flowering plant species in the olive family Oleaceae. It is native to mainland Europe, east to the Caucasus and the Alborz Mountains, and Great Britain and Ireland, the latter defining its western border. European ash rarely lives longer than 250 years. The ash does not bloom until it is 30 years old. The leaves are compound green, with 3-7 usually sessile. Etymologically it comes from the Latin word fraxinus.
