Tryptophan: An amino acid that is a precursor to the neuromediator serotonin. Increasing tryptophan in foods increases its concentration, which in turn stimulates the production of serotonin to bind to various receptor types. Serotonin controls many functions by acting on these receptors in different areas of the brain. For example, the animal's hormone secretion, pain, appetite, mood, and behavior.
