Amrita Aromatherapy Ravintsara

Ravintsara is an evergreen tree growing up to 30 feet high. It has a reddish trunk and dark waxy leaves. In spring it produces bright green foliage with small white flowers. It is not to be confused with Ravensara (Ravensara aromatica), which is another species.

Traditional Uses and Lore:

In the Madagascan language, Ravintsara means "good leaf" while Ravintsara Oil is referred to as "the oil that heals." Traditionally, the Malagasy people use the bark and stem as a tonic and antibacterial medicine. The leaves were also burnt in homes after a death to prevent the spread of disease. The anise flavored bark is used in the production of local rum.

Originating in Japan, Ravintsara was presented from Taiwan as an ornamental Colonizers took Ravintsara to Madagascar shortly after being introduced to this fine tree. Differently than the original far East cinnamonum camphora, the Madagascar variety does not contain camphor but 1.8. cineol.
