NATIONAL PARK VEGETATION
The diverse and varied physical characteristics of both the Dilek Peninsula and the Büyük Menderes Delta have resulted in diverse and varied vegetation within short distances. 804 plant species have been identified within the National Park. Six of these are found only here in the world. It also hosts 30 plant species found only in Turkey.
The most vibrant and healthy examples of almost all Mediterranean maquis vegetation are found on the peninsula. The Dilek Peninsula is the southernmost point of the Anatolian Chestnut (Mill.), which is widely distributed in Northern and Western Anatolia, and the Kartopu (viburnum tinusL.), Finike Juniper (Juniperus phoeniceaL.), Hybrid Pure Oak (Quercus ilex x coccifera) and Branched Cypress (Cupressus sempervirensL. var. horizontalis) is the only place where it grows, forming small forest communities.
In other words, the National Park is a unique nature museum where plant species from the Mediterranean to the Black Sea can be seen naturally together. Due to this unique biodiversity, the Dilek Peninsula has been designated a "Flora Biogenetic Reserve Area" by the Council of Europe, meaning an internationally protected area designed to protect a species or population whose flora is facing extinction or whose genetic diversity is severely diminishing.
The National Park's rich plant diversity can be seen more closely by interested visitors through botanical tours.
