Black pepper is one of the most widely used spices in the world. Our organic, fair-trade goodies can be used whole or ground. Black pepper is the dried fruit of the Piper nigrum plant, native to tropical regions. Black peppercorns retain their pungent flavor best when stored whole. In addition to their culinary uses, they can also be added to teas and infusions.

Black pepper is one of the most widely used spices in the world, adding warmth and flavor to savory dishes. It has been popular in India for thousands of years and is now easy to find almost everywhere on the planet. It has been used medicinally in both Ayurveda and Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM), and more recently in herbal folk healing practices. Various black pepper derivatives, such as piperine, show promise in supporting digestive health.

A member of the Piperaceae family, along with long pepper (Piper longum) and kava kava (Piper methysticum), black pepper is native to southern India and Sri Lanka and is widely cultivated in the tropics. The pepper plant is a tropical, perennial vine that requires a trellis or other support, such as a tree, to grow. It has aromatic, green, oval leaves and greenish-yellow flower spikes that emit a strong fragrance.

Black pepper is the most widely traded cultivated spice and is propagated by cuttings grown from the base of the trees. They bear fruit three to four years after planting and are cut around the fifteenth year. Black peppercorns and black peppercorns are actually immature fruits of the trade, picked as soon as they have reddened and dried in the sun. After drying for three days, the peppercorns darken and produce black pepper powder when ground. White peppercorns are obtained by allowing the fruit to ripen and removing the red outer coating.

Black pepper has been cultivated in Southern India for over two thousand years. Along with salt, pepper is the most popular spice in Indian cooking, having been used continuously for thousands of years and, in fact, since at least 2000 BC. Alexander the Great fought in Central Asia, paving the way for new trade routes that ultimately led to the discovery of black pepper in the West. It became increasingly popular and was widely traded by Arab spice traders.

In Asia, black pepper is considered a powerful herb useful in a variety of applications beyond its use as a spice, and is therefore an important herb in TCM and Ayurveda (the traditional healing system from India). In both TCM and Ayurveda, pepper is considered a pungent and energetically warming spice. In Ayurveda, it is often found in a formula called 'Trikatu,' a combination of black pepper (Piper nigrum), its relative long pepper (Piper longum), and ginger (Zingiber officinale), and is used to support digestion. It affects the stomach and large intestine meridians in TCM and is therefore used for digestive complaints and conditions where qi (energy) needs to be directed downward.
