How do I know which SPF is best for my skin? Is a higher SPF always better?

SPF (Sun Protection Factor) 30 sunscreen filters out 96.7% of UVB radiation while SPF 50 sunscreen filters out 98%. Despite the 30-50 labelling hinting at a significant increase in protection, SPF 50+ filters only an extra 1.3% of UVB rays, which Cancer Council says can give people a false sense of security. Remember "don't be shy to reapply".

Guidelines call for both SPF30 and SPF 50 sunscreen to be applied every two hours (regardless of what the packaging says) or after swimming, sweating or towel drying. While some sunscreens may provide resistance to water and sweat they are not waterproof and can also be rubbed off.

What’s the difference between UVA and UVB?

Think of UVB (B- for burn) rays, are the primary promoter of light induced skin cancer. UVA (A- aging) rays are the primary cause of photo aging (skin wrinkles, broken blood vessels and freckles), cataracts in the eye and photosensitivity. Don’t be fooled, 80% of the sun’s rays reach the earth on a cloudy day.

Should I use aerosol sprays or pump sprays?

What should I look for in a sunscreen if I have sensitive skin?

The first thing you want to look for is that your sunscreen is hypoallergenic and non-comedogenic (won’t block pores). However, with any sunscreen, you should always perform a “patch test” to check the skin’s response. Spray a small amount of sunscreen on the inside of a wrist. Monitor the area for 20 minutes. If no redness or irritation occurs, the product can generally be used without concern.
