Buckwheat Flour

Buckwheat flour is obtained by grinding the buckwheat plant. Although its name is "buckwheat," it has nothing to do with wheat. It contains more protein. Therefore, buckwheat flour is an ideal food for those who want a protein-rich diet. So, what do we know about the nutritional values of buckwheat flour? Let's first provide some basic information about buckwheat. Then, let's take a look at what can be done with buckwheat flour.

What is Buckwheat?

Belonging to the Sorrel family, buckwheat is a plant species belonging to the Fagopyrum genus. Its productivity is lower than that of wheat. Therefore, its commercial production is not as efficient as that of wheat. Due to its structure, buckwheat flour is likened to nuts. It is available in both grain and flour forms.

Buckwheat flour, which is as famous as buckwheat itself, is obtained by grinding this plant. Contrary to popular belief, buckwheat flour is not a grain. It is classified as a grain-like product. Buckwheat, belonging to the Sorrel family, is therefore preferred as an alternative. There are a considerable number of baked goods that can be made with buckwheat flour. For this purpose, we recommend you take a look at the following headings.

Buckwheat is mostly produced in Eastern Europe (Poland, Estonia, Latvia, Ukraine). In France and Canada, it is produced as poultry feed. Although various products are made from buckwheat flour in many countries around the world, it is not suitable for bread making on its own. Buckwheat production in our country, however, does not have significant commercial value. This is because buckwheat production is not profitable enough due to its low yield and climatic conditions.

What are the Types of Buckwheat?

There are three types of buckwheat. These are:

  • Long buckwheat
  • Tatar buckwheat and
  • Tibetan buckwheat.

How to Store Buckwheat Flour?

Buckwheat flour, like other flours, should be stored carefully. To do this, simply follow the storage conditions below:

  • Buckwheat flour should be stored in a cool, dry environment. The humidity should not exceed 100 . Buckwheat flour stored in high humidity for extended periods will be damaged.
  • Buckwheat flour can be stored at room temperature. High temperatures in the summer months can shorten the shelf life of buckwheat flour. Therefore, store it in a closed cupboard or drawer.
  • Buckwheat flour should not be stored open. Otherwise, it can spoil quickly. Therefore, seal the container tightly after use or add it to a jar.
