MühendisARI Kastamonu CHESTNUT HONEY Production Adventure
As the MühendisARI family, our Chestnut Honey production adventure is our most challenging and most risky season. It makes no difference where the bees selected for our chestnut honey bee farm spend the winter or spring. We select the most productive beehives with the highest colony strength from among all our bee farms. We gather them at our bee farm in Samsun Terme in May. Here, we carry out the necessary maintenance and preparations until the chestnut trees bloom. Halis Çelik, our expert beekeeper responsible for chestnut honey production, visits the cities with chestnut forests in early June to visit the locations where honey production will be performed. Visiting the locations, in other words, selecting and renting suitable land is a very challenging process, as finding suitable land in mountainous forested areas is very difficult. It's also necessary to monitor the weather conditions through meteorological records. The flowering period for chestnut trees lasts approximately 15 days, and if even the slightest rain falls during this period, harvesting chestnut honey in the forest surrounding the bees becomes a dream. The bee transportation process begins in the first week of June. Because the land is forested, transportation is generally by pickup truck, leading to sleepless nights. Bee-laden vehicles departing from Terme are placed on land deemed suitable for production that year in Black Sea cities like Zonguldak, Sinop, Kastamonu, Artvin, and Rize. Once the bee farm is established on suitable land, maintenance is virtually nonexistent. In that short time, the bees are only expected to carry the strong-smelling chestnut honey nectar back to the hive. And every day, we constantly check the weather forecast with curiosity. Because if it rains, we'll be in trouble.
Fifteen days pass, and harvest time arrives at the end of June. It's crucial to be quick, because the bees quickly consume the honey they produce, as there's no other nectar available in the forest. Harvesting that uniquely fragrant chestnut honey is a delight. The real pleasure lies in reaping the rewards of your labor. Of course, the adventure doesn't end there. These beehives are transported to the vast sunflower fields around Çorumaya, and Engineer Bee continues the season with a new honey production adventure.
