Brundi Coffee Characteristics
Because most of the varieties found in Burundi are Bourbon or Bourbon derivatives, Brundi coffee is known for its intense body and sweetness. The higher altitudes contribute to a more nuanced acidity, which often complements the sweetness and body. This coffee is a fine espresso and single-origin filter option.
Growing Regions
Kayanza, located in northern Brundi, is the capital of the Kayanza Empire.
Processing Method
Traditional Brundi processing methods use washing stations. In this method, the coffee is dry-fermented for intervals of 12 to 24 hours. This initial addition of water halts the fermentation process if any sugar remains during dry fermentation. The coffee is filtered through water channels and then soaked for another 12 to 18 hours before being dried in parchment on raised beds.
Production History
The coffee industry in Brûndi has undergone significant developments and changes, all of which have significantly impacted coffee production. The initial phase for coffee was under Belgian control until Brûndi's independence in 1962. During this period, the Belgians controlled coffee production and its sale. Coffee was produced as a cash crop. The coffee industry was privately owned from 1962 to 1976. During this period, the state intervened only to fund research, assist with quality improvements, and regulate and stabilize the prices received by producers. Even with state assistance, the quantity and quality of coffee production declined. The decline in production was due to post-independence political instability and a lack of public interest in coffee cultivation. Coffee was seen as a symbol of growth and colonization. In 1976, the coffee industry came under full state control. Mixed state-owned and privately owned companies were created to improve overall coffee management.
Conclusion
Today, Burundi is a country whose main export and crop is coffee. After the intense civil war of the late 20th century, coffee truly helped rebuild Burundi. Like Rwanda, Burundi Coffee struggles against the "potato defect," a particularly distinctive defect that resembles the smell and taste of raw potatoes. This defect is less common today due to increased research on causes and prevention, but it is still an issue that the country and region take seriously to alleviate any concerns from potential buyers.
