Smooth hawthorn, two-style hawthorn or thorny hawthorn (Crataegus levigeât) is a plant of the Crataegus genus belonging to the Rosaceae family. An old name also designates it: Crataegus oxyacantha. The term oxyacantha comes from the Latin oxyacanthus: "with sharp thorns". Commonly, the dialect calls it "Aubespine", with obviously differences from one region to another. Crataegus levigeât (thorny hawthorn) is distinguished by spreading branches, an almost entire leaf (3 faint lobes at the top) clearly wedge-shaped at the base. Its flower contains 2 or 3 styles, its fruit two stones. The thorny hawthorn is very common in the north of French territory (even on the coast) scattered in the South and rare in the Mediterranean region.
