Indian plantain (Plantago ovata), or ispaghul, is a species of plantain native to India. It is the ispaghul of the French pharmacopoeia which calls psyllium another species of plantain (Plantage afar L.), with brown seeds, known as Provence. It is often called on the internet by Anglicism psyllium (or blond psyllium to distinguish it from the true French psyllium) the English call it psyllium. The ispaghul of the French pharmacopoeia designates the seed or the integument of the seed. The term "psyllium", originally, concerns three distinct species: Plantage psyllium, Plantage indiça (synonym Plantage arènerai) and Plantage ovate.
