New PLANTCOLOR™ pigments come from root crops such as beets, radishes and purple potatoes. The non-toxic anthionine and betalains used in the lighter-colouring Black Cherry, Raspberry and Hazelnut Hurraw lip balms were also used in the 100 plant-based Hurraw lipsticks.
As you can imagine, the process of producing pigment from plants is long and laborious.
Like most of the ingredients used in Hurraw products, these roots were grown in bright sun, soaked in rain, pollinated by insects, spent a full growing season, and then labor intensively to fulfill their color destiny. Within a day after harvest, the root juices are extracted, sprayed on a carrier medium (maltodextrin or acacia gum), dried and ground to microfine. They are tested for purity and then they are ready to be used in Hurraw products.
Compared to Hurraw's lightly colored lip moisturizers, Hurraw lipsticks give more pronounced color.
100 PLANTCOLOR™ does not contain iron oxide (metal), carmine (red color insect) or FD C D C synthetic dyes and lacquers (petroleum).
They are so natural that you can imagine that when using the product, you will literally apply the root vegetables to your lips and feel their natural taste and smell. It's lightly flavored with cherry-orange-vanilla and a touch sweetened with organic stevia. The tartness comes from the citric acid used to preserve the pigments, and of course, like all Hurraw balms, the lipsticks are enriched with organic cocoa, coconut, and organic Montana-grown safflower oil.
