APPLICATION WITH ISMID, One of the Prophetic Treatment Methods
Jabir (r.a) said:I heard the following from the Messenger of Allah (pbuh):"When you go to bed, continue applying the kohl to your eyes. Because it cleans the eye, increases vision and grows hairs (that is, eyelashes)." (Ibn Mâce, Medicine, 25)In the narration from Ibn Abbas (r.a), the Prophet (pbuh) said:"Continue to use Ismid, because it is the best of your kohls. It gives shine to the eyes (clarifies vision) and grows the hair (eyelashes)." (Tirmidhi, Libas 23)Today, we know that medicines for many diseases are produced from plants. There are many examples of prophetic medicine revealed by our Prophet in the hadiths However, we must regretfully express that we, as Muslims, cannot say that we appreciate this very much and that we have researched these recommendations to the extent of today's possibilities and revealed the healing elements in them and made them available to people. In fact, our effort in this regard is the same as our effort in complying with other sunnahs.It is mentioned in the hadiths that some of the substances recommended as medicine for various diseases are herbal substances, and that some medicines should be sought for other diseases. The amyd stone recommended by our Prophet (pbuh) for the eyes should also be considered in this context. Ismid is the riding stone. It is black in color and tinges red. It is said that the best one is produced in Isfahan. It is a shiny stone that is easy to split. When clean, it is white silver in color.It emits a scent when rubbed between fingers. (Ali Riza KARABULUT, Tibb-i Nebevî Encyclopedia, Mektebe Yay., vol.2, p.624)Some of the benefits of isid, which our Prophet (pbuh) recommended to apply especially before going to bed, are listed as follows:
- Applying kohl gives shine to the eyes and allows the eyes to see clearly.
- It strengthens the optic nerves.
- The kohl absorbs tears and pus from the eyes and removes burrs.
- It re-grows the eyelashes and ensures their proliferation.
- It strengthens the eye vessels - especially in the elderly and children.
- It relieves headaches when applied with thin liquid honey.
- The kohl stone with some musk added to it is the most beautiful kohl, especially for the elderly and those with weak eyes. (Ibn-i Kayyim, Medicine, p.459)
- Since the main ingredient of the kohl is 'antimony', it blackens the eyelashes.
- Since the kohl is black, it retains the heat rays coming from the sun. Because it is also mentioned that excessive heat rays spread to the eye and damage the lens and retina of the eye.
- Some of the provisions regarding riding are as follows:
- It is makruh for men to wear kohl just to adorn themselves.
- The kohl is applied before going to bed. As kohl, kohl made of "ismid" stone is used.
- On Fridays smell, crawling, washing, etc. Just as it is sunnah, applying kohl is also sunnah.
- Drive It is swiped by pulling three times to the right, three times to the left (so that the number is odd for each pull), or three times to the right and twice to the left (to keep the number odd in total).
- Smoking kohl does not break the fast even if the taste is felt in the throat or if the saliva is colored when you spit it out.
- It is makruh to use silver kohl.
