Methylcobalamin vs. Cyanocobalamin

Cyanocobalamin is a synthetic form of vitamin B-12 containing cyanide, whereas methylcobalamin has a methyl group instead and is obtained naturally from the diet in foods such as meat, eggs, and milk. Evidence suggests more cobalamin accumulates in the liver with ingestion of methylcobalamin vs. cyanocobalamin, which is excreted in the urine at a higher rate than methylcobalamin.*

B12 Form as Naturally Found in Food

There are two active forms of vitamin B-12 used by the body, methylcobalamin and adeonsylcobalamin. Do you need to take both forms? No. As methylcobalamin is the main form found naturally in food, the methyl group can be removed inside the cell to make adenosylcobalamin, so Methyl B-12 satisfies all of the body’s needs.

Methylcobalamin (Methyl B-12) is better absorbed and retained than other forms of B12 (e.g., cyanocobalamin). Methyl B-12 supports nerve tissue and brain cells, promotes better sleep and recycles (via methylation) homocysteine, an oxidizing metabolite, back into the amino acid methionine. Also, vegetarians/vegans often require B12 supplementation.
