Chicory root is harvested from the wild chicory plant (Cichorium intybus). This plant often grows along roadsides and fields, colonizing rocky soils in Central Europe. Chicory root is harvested in autumn and air-dried. The dried chicory roots are sold in 6 mm pieces. Chicory root primarily contains polysaccharides, sesquiterpene lactones, and cichoria. Chicory root is used as an herbal infusion. For a teapot, pour 1 to 2 teaspoons of chicory root over 250 ml of boiling water and let it steep for 8 minutes. 3 to 4 cups of chicory tea per day is the recommended dosage. The chicory root comes from controlled wild harvesting and is free of harmful substances.
