At Enzian, everyone thinks of the small, eye-catching blue mountain flowers that bloom in mountain meadows. But gentian root is harvested from the larger relative of Gentiana lutea. The greater enziane blooms yellow and grows up to 1 meter tall, but it is also found in mountain meadows in the Alps. Unfortunately, yellow gentian is very rare, and collection is very limited. Gentian root is harvested in autumn, after flowering. The root is sun-dried and then cut into pieces approximately 6 mm in size. Gentian root mainly contains bitter substances, as well as flavonoids, sugars, and essential oils. Gentian root is primarily used as a tea infusion or in liqueurs. To make tea, 1 to 2 teaspoons of the root are heated to a boil in 1 cup (250 ml) of water. After 2 minutes, strain the infusion through a sieve and drink it. 1 to 2 cups per day is the recommended dosage. The gentian root comes from a controlled collection and has a shelf life of 24 months.
