Eggwort (Althaea officinalis) grows in dry, poor soils and sites in Eastern and Southern Europe and also tolerates slightly saline environments. The eggwort root is harvested in the autumn and gently dried. After drying, the root is cut. Eggwort root contains mucilage, essential oils, pectin, fatty oils, and tannins. The mucilage is particularly beneficial for plant healing. Eggwort root is also used to make eggwort tea. To prepare eggwort tea, pour 2 teaspoons of cut eggwort root with 250 ml of cold water and let it steep for 30 minutes, stirring occasionally.
