Atopic Dermatitis (Eczema)

Atopic dermatitis (atopic eczema) is a chronic, inflammatory skin disease characterized by dryness and itching. It is seen in 10-15 of children and 2-10 of adults. Its most distinctive feature is dry and itchy skin. The reason for this is that the protective layer on the upper layer of the skin is damaged and the skin loses its moisture. We can compare the skin to the walls of a house. Just as there are bricks in a wall and the mortar that holds the bricks together, our skin contains skin cellsand lipids (fats). We can think of the cells in our skin as bricks and lipids as the mortar that holds the bricks together and gives strength to the wall. Lipids are important structures that settle between the cells in the uppermost layer of our skin and strengthen the protective layer of the skin by combining with water. They act as mortar between the cells in the uppermost layer of the skin and stick the skin cells to each other and give strength to the protective layer of the skin. Lipids found in the skin are among the most important components of the uppermost layer of the skin. The most important of these lipids is linoleic acid, which is found in the most concentrated form in the skin. Since linoleic acid cannot be synthesized in the human body, it is a very important fatty acid for the skin that must be taken externally, from plant sources. When the linoleic acid present in the skin decreases, chronic skin diseases such as atopic dermatitis can occur. In children and adults with dry skin, replacing the depleted fatty acids and moisturizing the skin increases the quality of life.
