Humans have known and consumed barley for over 4,000 years. Cultivated barley originated in Abyssinia. In Central Europe, barley was known before wheat. It was used to make a rudimentary bread, a kind of flatbread. Barley is a grass, and its various species constitute the genus Hordeum.
