APPLYING LORMA WITH ISMID, A NATIONAL TREATMENT METHODSJabir (ra) said:I heard the Messenger of Allah (pbuh) say:"When you go to bed, continue to apply ismid (the kohl called) to your eyes. Because it cleans the eye, increases the power of vision and grows hairs (i.e. eyelashes)." (Ibn-i Majah, Tibb, 25)In the narration from Ibn-i Abbas (ra), the Messenger of Allah (pbuh) said:"Continue to use Ismid, for it is the best of your eyeliner. It brightens the eyes (makes vision clear) and grows hair (eyelashes)." (Tirmidhi, Libas 23)Today, we know that the cure for many diseases is produced from plants. There are many examples of the prophetic medicine communicated by our Prophet in the hadiths however, it is regrettable to state that as Muslims, we cannot say that we appreciate its value very much, research these recommendations to the extent of today's possibilities, reveal the healing elements in them and present them to people for their benefit. In fact, our efforts in this regard are at the same level as our efforts in complying with other sunnahs. It is mentioned in the hadiths that some of the substances recommended as remedies for various illnesses are herbal substances and that certain remedies should be sought for illnesses other than these. The ismid stone that our Prophet (pbuh) recommended for the eyes should also be considered in this context. Ismid is a kohl stone. It is black in color and turns red. It is said that the best one is found in Isfahan. It is a shiny stone that is easy to break. When it is clean, it is white and silver in color. It releases a scent when rubbed between the fingers. (Ali Riza KARABULUT, Tibb-i Nebevî Ensiklopedisi, Mektebe Yay., v.2, p.624)Some of the benefits of ismid, which our Prophet (pbuh) recommended to be applied especially before going to bed, are listed as follows:• Kohl gives brightness to the eye and enables the eye to see clearly.• It strengthens the optic nerves.• Kohl absorbs tears and pus in the eyes, and removes crust.• It regrows eyelashes and ensures their multiplication.• It reinforces the eye vessels -especially in the elderly and children-.• When applied with thin liquid honey, it relieves headaches.• Kohl stone with a little musk added is the best kohl, especially for the elderly and those with weak eyes. (Ibn-i Kayyim, Medicine, p.459)• Since the main ingredient of kohl is 'antimony', it blackens the eyelashes.• Kohl is black because it retains the heat rays coming from the sun. Because it is also mentioned that excessive heat rays reaching the eye damage the lens and retina in the eye. Here are some rulings about kohl:• It is makruh for men to apply kohl only for adornment.• Kohl is applied before going to bed. Kohl made of "ismid" stone is used as kohl.• On Fridays it is sunnah to apply kohl, just as it is sunnah to apply perfume, wash, etc.• Kohl is applied by applying it three times to the right, three times to the left (so that the number is odd with each application), or three times to the right and twice to the left (so that the number in total is odd).• Applying kohl does not break the fast, even if the taste is felt in the throat or if the saliva is colored when spit out.
We know from various sources that the Prophet stated that the use of Ismid kohl is a cure for the eyes and that he himself would apply kohl before going to bed.
As a result of the examination of this natural stone, it has been scientifically announced that it contains antimony, zinc and sulfur. The kohl, which is crushed into powder, is placed in a kohl container. It is applied to the right eye 3 times and the left eye 3 times.
