Burundi is a landlocked, mountainous country. Located at the top of the Nile-Congo basin, its characteristics are often compared to those of neighboring Rwandan coffee. The history of coffee in Burundi began in the 1930s when the Belgians brought Arabica coffee plants to Burundi. Burundi declared its independence in 1962, and more than 800,000 families currently cultivate coffee. These families have an average of 50-250 trees on their farms. In Burundi, 25 million coffee plants are produced on more than 60,000 hectares. The coffee variety produced is Bourbon. The coffee is also dried using the wet process.
Kayanza is one of the 17 provinces of Burundi. Kayanza is famous for its coffee production and has a high population density.
