The poppy plant is obtained from the seed of the yellowish-brown opium poppy plant, which grows around the Mediterranean. Cultivated since the 6th century, the poppy is considered one of the oldest plants cultivated by humanity. With its hazelnut flavor, the blue poppy is widely used in bread, bagels, and buns, as well as for flavoring and decorating pastries. It contains trace amounts of an opium-like chemical called opium. This chemical content mostly comes from the immature seeds. However, since this type of poppy is not used as a spice, the effect is not noticeable. It can be stored for long periods without going stale when kept in a cool place such as a refrigerator.
