What is Barley Flour

Barley flour is just what it sounds like, a non-wheat flour made from grinding whole barley. It's a popular alternative to wheat flour. It is a good flour to substitute into quick breads, muffins and cookies for a little whole grain twist and is an easy ingredient to play around with in the kitchen in general. Barley flour has a sweet, nut-like flavor that enhances the flavor of pancakes, bread dough, quick breads, rye bread and more, Add it to your favorite baking recipes. Whole barley has a light golden-brown color. Barley is usually harvested in warmer seasons, so it is usually harvested in spring time. Barley flour is a fine powder made by grinding whole barley grain. It can also be used in other cooking applications, such as acting as a thickener in soups and sauces. When barley is freshly harvested, it has a fibrous outer layer that must be removed to make hulled barley.

Culinary Uses:

Barley flour is used to prepare breads such as barley bread. It is sometimes added to wheat flour, creating a composite flour, which is used to prepare various breads. Its addition to wheat flour creates a darker-colored baked end-product, and also alters the flavor of the product. Barley flour is also used as an ingredient in some specialty foods. Barley and Gram Flour Pizza Ingredients: 1/2 cup barley flour 1/2 cup gram flour 1 tsp dry yeast 2 tsp sugar, 1 tsp salt 2 tbsp. oil 1 cup cheese spread as required Water Instructions: Take a bowl add flour, dry yeast, sugar, salt, oil, needed water mix well, knead a dough, keep aside. Then take a dough and shape up a pizza, then spread a cheese, and bake a pizza. Now ready to serve.	Flatbread Ingredients: Barley Flour - 1 Cup Wheat Flour - Half Cup Grated Carrot - Half Cup Chopped Onion - 2 Spoon (Optional) Salt Oil Water Instructions: In a bowl, mix barley flour, wheat flour, grated carrot, chopped onion, salt, 2 spoon oil. Crumble the mixture by hands. Now knead a smooth dough using water. Keep the dough covered for 15 minutes. Now roll out a paratha & cook on griddle applying oil both sides. When cooked from both the sides, its ready to enjoy.	Vegan Zucchini Bread Ingredients: 3 cups barley flour 3 tbsp. chia seeds 1 tsp salt, 1 tsp baking soda, 1/2 tsp baking powder 1 tbsp. cinnamon, 1 tsp nutmeg, 3 cups zucchini grated 1 cup apple sauce unsweetened, 1 1/2 cups coconut sugar, 1 tbsp. vanilla extract Instructions: Preheat your oven to 325 degrees F. Grease two 9x5" loaf pans or round pans with avocado oil or coconut oil. In a large bowl, mix the barley flour, chia seeds, salt, baking soda, baking powder, cinnamon and nutmeg. Set aside. In a medium bowl, combine the zucchini, applesauce, sweetener and vanilla. Stir in the flour mixture until combined. Divide the batter between your pans. Bake for about 1 hour or until a toothpick inserted into the zucchini bread comes out clean. Cool in the pans for 10 minutes. Enjoy!
