St. John's wort is part of the genus Hypericum, which consists of about 400 species distributed worldwide, except in deserts and arctic regions. In the tropics, however, St. John's wort is only found in the mountains. St. John's wort is classified in the Hypericaceae family according to the APG III phylogenetic classification (2009) or in the Clusiaceae family according to the classical classification of Cronquist (1981). The name St. John's wort means a thousand holes. It is due to the common European species Hypericum perforatum which has small translucent glands. When observing the leaves through transparency, these glands give the impression of a multitude of tiny perforations.
