Ceramide:Naturally occurring long lipid chains (fats) that are the main components of the outer layers of the skin. The skin prevents water movement and controls loss thanks to its unique composition containing 50 ceramides, 25 cholesterol and 15 free fatty acids.

Ceramides are essential for their water retention capacity, and adding them to a skin care product helps provide replenishing and restoring benefits. Nine different ceramides have been identified in the skin, some of which are used in skin care products.

On a skin care product ingredient label, you'll see listed as ceramide AP, ceramide EOP, ceramide NG, ceramide NP, ceramide NS, phytophingosine, and sphingosine.

Ceramides used in skin care products are typically derived from plants (wheat germ is a common source) or synthetic There is no research showing that one of the two forms is preferred over the other.

Ceramides work best for the skin when combined with other regenerating ingredients such as fatty acids and cholesterol. These lipid blends work in a variety of ways to improve skin's texture, elasticity, and help calm signs of irritation.
