This product is part of the structure of two important coenzymes. These are NAD (nicotinamine adenine dinucleotide) and NADP (nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide phosphate). Enzymes containing NAD and NADP are important in carbohydrate, protein, and lipid metabolisms. Therefore, they are very important in the metabolisms that provide energy to the animal. In poultry, deficiency of this vitamin can lead to growth retardation, decreased feed consumption, impaired feather development, and foot and skin permatitis. Niacin deficiency causes inflammation in the oral cavity and upper esophagus in two-week-old chicks, known as "black tongue." Weight loss, decreased egg production, and decreased fertilization can occur in laying hens. Niacin and tryptophan deficiency can cause sudden anorexia, diarrhea, ataxia, and dehydration in pre-ruminant calves. In dairy animals, it increases milk fat and milk production.
