What is the difference between the phycocyanin that we consume in dry spirulina and that contained in an extract? Spirulina contains a large quantity of phycocyanin, around 15 to 20 before drying. The release of phycocyanin from spirulina has been shown to be very slow, up to 36 hours. However, the window for oral absorption of active molecules is preferentially located in the small intestine and more particularly in the duodenum. This area is located immediately after the stomach and therefore is crossed quickly after oral ingestion of food. Knowing that the consumption of spirulina takes at most two hours to reach the duodenum, we can therefore consider that the consumption of dry or even fresh spirulina cannot provide much benefit from the effects of phycocyanin if it is not solubilized before reaching the small intestine. Thus, claims relating to the phycocyanin content of dry spirulina have little or no justification, unless you extract it yourself before use. We also note that all the in-vitro and in-vivo studies which have demonstrated the effects of phycocyanin have all been carried out on the basis of extracts and not from whole spirulina (F. Ainsi, les allégations portant sur la teneur en phycocyanine sur les spirulines sèches n'ont que peu ou pas de justification, sauf à en faire soi-même l'extraction avant utilisation.
