Key Benefits

🦐 Biofilm Growth — Cholla wood develops biofilm as it breaks down, creating a natural foraging surface that shrimp actively feed on.
🛡️ Antibacterial Protection — Tannins released from the wood have antibacterial and antifungal properties that help protect fish and shrimp from disease.
🌳 Natural Breakdown — Unlike most aquarium woods, cholla is soft and gradually breaks down, triggering beneficial biological processes in the tank.
🏠 Safe Refuge — The wood structure provides a place for shrimp to feel secure in the aquarium environment.

Common Questions

How do you prepare cholla wood for an aquarium?

Rinse well, boil for 10-15 minutes to clean and sanitize, then rinse again and soak in fresh water for 24-48 hours to water log it and allow tannin release.

Why do shrimp gather on cholla wood?

Biofilm forms on the wood as it breaks down, and this biofilm is one of shrimp's favorite foods, making it an excellent foraging surface.

What are the tannins released from cholla wood?

Tannins have antibacterial and antifungal properties that help protect fish and shrimp against disease.
