Four Thieves Vinegar is a vinegar that takes its name from a historical event. Used as a medicine for centuries, this vinegar has an interesting story. According to the story, during a plague epidemic in the city of Marseille, in present-day France, in the 14th century (some sources state that this plague epidemic was widespread throughout Europe and caused the death of 25 million people in the 14th century), four thieves were robbing houses and shops in villages ravaged by the plague, but they were unaffected by the disease.
According to legend, thieves were caught red-handed robbing plague victims and were sentenced to death. However, they were told they would be pardoned if they explained how they hadn't contracted the plague. They confessed to washing their hands with vinegar they had made and gargling with it. The thieves were pardoned and released on the condition that they demonstrated how to prepare it on the streets.
