Panforte originates from an old Sienese delicacy called "Panmelato." The original recipe was enhanced by ancient pharmacists using precious spices from the Orient. Then, in 1879, pharmacist Galgano Parenti, owner of one of the largest Panforte manufacturers, who later joined the Sapori family, created a new version of Panforte and dedicated it to Queen Margherita of Savoy, who visited Siena for the Palio in August.
