Smoked Red Pepper 250g
Originally native to South America, this sweeter variety of Capsicum annuum has become naturalized in Hungary and Spain, thus making its way into various culinary traditions. Paprika gets its color from its carotenoid content, and its heat levels range from mild to hot. Our organic smoked paprika powder is mild in spice and adds an earthy, savory flavor to soups, sauces, and grilled vegetables. It's also delicious as a garnish for eggs and potatoes.
Most commonly known as a culinary herb, paprika shares the medicinal properties of most varieties of paprika. Paprika is a South American native naturalized in Hungary and Spain. Hungarian paprika is the spicer of the two and is what most people think of when they think of paprika. Paprika is often used as a garnish and to add color to egg and potato dishes. Its spiciness varies depending on the ratio of seeds, skins, and fruit in the ground powder, and other varieties have been developed, including smoked or roasted paprika, which adds a beautifully rounded, slightly smoky flavor to culinary creations. Although paprika contains capsaicin, it is one of the milder peppers and is not generally used medicinally. However, it is rich in vitamin C and carotenoids and makes a healthy addition to the diet when eaten fresh. Capsicum annuum is a member of the Solanaceae family.
Our smoked paprika powder typically ranges from 300-800 HU and is considered non-pungent. The pungency of a hot pepper has historically been measured using the Scoville scale, which assigns heat units (SHU or HU) using a subjective assessment to determine the concentration of capsaicin in a pepper. Capsaicin is the active ingredient in hot peppers and is responsible for the heat and occasional burning sensation felt. The Scoville scale, developed by American pharmacist Wilbur Scoville, remains the most common way to classify a pepper's heat, but modern, laboratory-based testing methods are now used.
Paprika's primary use is as a culinary spice, adding color and spice to food. Its heat ranges from very mild and sweet to decidedly spicy across seven levels. Hungarian paprika is known for its spiciness and is one of the most distinctive features of Hungarian cooking.
