The Russian name of the plant comes from the word "derba," meaning "swampy area." Another name for the plant, loosestrife, stems from the fact that drops of water, resembling tears, flow from its leaves in any weather.

This characteristic of the plant is associated with a legend, according to which the herb originally grew where the tears of the Virgin Mary fell, mourning the death of Christ.

It was believed that placing a bunch of loosestrife under the pillow of a capricious child would help them fall asleep quickly.

In Rus', the plant was endowed with magical properties.

It was believed that if you dig up a loosestrife root with a wooden shovel on the night of Ivan Kupala, bless it in church, and carve a cross from it, it will protect a person from any illness and help them live a long and happy life.

Русское название растения произошло от слова «дерба», что означало «болотистая местность». Еще одно название растения – плакун-трава связано с тем, что в любую погоду с листьев дербенника стекают капли воды, которые похожи на слезы.

С этой особенностью растения связана легенда, согласно которой трава первоначально выросла там, где падали слезы Богородицы, оплакивающей смерть Христа. Считалось, что если положить пучок дербенника под подушку капризному ребенку, то он быстро уснет.

Растение на Руси наделяли магическими свойствами. Считалось, что если в ночь на Ивана Купала выкопать корень дербенника деревянной лопаткой, освятить его в церкви и вырезать из него крест, то он защитит человека от любых болезней и поможет ему прожить долгую и счастливую жизнь.
