What is heartburn?

Heartburn—or acid indigestion—is a burning sensation or discomfort that is generally felt in the chest. This feeling can last from a few minutes to a few hours or more for some people.

Why do people get heartburn or acid indigestion?

Heartburn is caused when acids from your stomach are forced back up through the esophagus, where the delicate tissues may be compromised from the acid. This backup is called “acid reflux” and creates the familiar, fiery sensation we call heartburn.

What foods trigger heartburn?

Some of the worst known offenders are: alcohol (especially red wine), coffee and caffeinated beverages, chocolate, spicy foods, peppermint or spearmint, citrus drinks like orange juice, tomato products and other high-acid foods, and high-fat meals.
