Het idee om de teaballen uit te vinden, kwam Simon tijdens een vakantie. Daar bereidde hij zich een Earl Grey thee, die hij per ongeluk te lang liet trekken. Bij het uitdrukken van het theezakje druppeld deze donkere theevlekken op zijn hemd en vervuilde het tafelkleed. Op die dag zwoer hij de strijd aan te kondigen tegen het "Trek-Time Drama" - zoals hij het noemt - en de theezakjes en ontwikkelde vervolgens de theeballen.
