Our Kenya Blue Mountain Roast Coffee Beans

The Java Emporium's Single Origin Kenyan Blue Mountain Roast Coffee Beans

The Kenyan Alternative to Jamaican Blue Mountain coffee ( it's grown from the Jamaican Blue Mountain seed stock)

If you are looking for a smooth, rich and aromatic coffee experience, you should try Kenyan blue mountain coffee. This coffee is grown in the high-altitude regions of Kenya, where the soil is fertile and the climate is ideal for producing high-quality beans. The beans are hand-picked and processed with care, ensuring that they retain their natural flavours and aroma.

You can brew it in different ways, depending on your preference. For example, you can use a filter to get a clean and crisp cup, or an espresso machine to get a strong and creamy shot. You can also try cold brewing it for a refreshing and smooth drink. No matter how you brew it, you will love the taste and aroma of Kenyan blue mountain coffee. The roast coffee beans come in three sizes: Sample(50g), Standard(227g) and Catering (1kg).

The Flavour

Kenyan blue mountain coffee has a distinctive flavour profile, with notes of citrus, berries and chocolate. It is also low in acidity and bitterness, making it easy to drink and enjoy.

  • Complex and Intense
  • Fruity and Chocolate Flavours
  • A Touch Acidity
  • very Smooth

Some people add a bit of sugar that they say highlights the flavours, not for me but you may like it. Great black or with a drop of milk.

Kenya- A Passion for Coffee

Kenya grows some of the best coffee in the world. Ideal conditions, the soil is rich in minerals and nutrients from the volcanic activity of the Great Rift Valley. Trees grow at high altitude, over 6000ft. The low temperature and oxygen slow down the ripening of the cherries and enhance flavour.

The ripest cherries are handpicked, and defects removed. The beans are roasted In Northumbria by hand.

The Highlights...

  • Roast: Light Medium
  • Flavour Profile: Citrus, Berries and Chocolate
  • Smooth with a touch of acidity
  • Suits black coffee not overpowering but really good with milk or cream aswell.

Making Your Coffee with Kenya Blue Mountain Beans

Coffee isn't complicated. Some flavours suit some styles of brewing and additions, milk, syrups etc.

These are just some ideas on things you can try to add variety to your coffee drinking experience.

There are different ways to brew coffee and the best way to brew Kenya Blue Mountain coffee beans depends on your preference. Kenya Blue Mountain Coffee is suitable for use with the following brewing methods:

  • Cafetiere
  • Filter
  • Percolator
  • Vacuum

We think the best way to do it is with either a pour-over or immersion (cafetiere) brewing technique. Which you choose will depend on how you like your coffee. Personally, I drink both black and white Yirgacheffe, depending on the mood. I find sweetners, flavoured or otherwise, a bit overpowering with Yirgacheffe beans. Just experiment and see how you like it best.

What grind to Use

The grind you select is mainly determined by the mechanics of the method you want to use.

  • French Press/ Cafetiere- a course grind, this limits the number of grounds that end up in your cup.
  • Espresso Machine- Fine ground the machines filtering and pressure prevent grounds going through, and increase the speed of flavour extraction.

Using a cafetière or French Press

A course grind, for less grounds in the cup. Coffee cups are small around 100ml for espresso size. Rule of thumb: 8 to 9 grams per cup. A typical tablespoon of coffee grounds is about 5g.

So, for a mug of Americano style coffee (about 300ml) two to three tables spoons in a 2 to 3 cup (350ml) cafetiere.

At first, go for a bit stronger: you can always dilute if too strong.

Pour Over Method

Pour over brewing with, say a Chemex style flask and filter paper use a medium/course grind. This reduces grounds getting into the final drink.

Courser ground beans give up their flavour more slowly suiting pour over carafes. 2 to 3 tablespoons of grounds for a mug sizes drink (2 to 3 50z cups).

A pour over carafe stops the final drink sitting with the water reducing over brew extraction.

Cafetiere or French Press

Kenyan Blue Mountain in the French Press or Cafetiere

  1. Grind your coffee beans, a coarse grind is best, granulated sugar sort of size.
  2. Heat your water to boiling point, Wait for a minute or so to allow the water to cool. We're looking for a temperature 93c-97c.
  3. Add 2 tablespoons of ground coffee to the carafe for every 8 ounces of water (adjust as you learn what best suits your taste)
  4. Stir the carafe a few times to combine.
  5. Wait 4 minutes or so, it should be easy to push the plunger down if ready.

A rough guide on getting the strength of brew you like.

The key ratio is the weight of beans(g) to the volume water(ml). Fortunately, 1 ml water weighs 1g. So, we can use a simple ration.

  • Strong Coffee: 65g for a liter of water (15:1). A typical UK mug of coffee is 330ml so you would need 20ish grams or 4 tablespoons or so.
  • Typical Coffee: 50g for a liter of water (20:1) will give a mild drink. For a UK mug your looking at 15 grams or 3 tablespoons

You can always dilute with more water, milk or cream if you find your brew to strong.

A good Kenyan is one of the finest coffees available on the market, due to its intensity of body and fruitiness (blackcurrant and grapefruit). Light Medium Roast. Our Kenya Blue Mountain coffee is stronger than its Jamaican counterpart. This is a very popular bean with cafetiere users looking for a smooth and refreshing brew. Jamaican Blue Mountain coffee is the most well-known variety in the UK. Unfortunately, blue mountain coffee price is very high. Kenya Blue Mountain is an excellent alternative grown from the same strain at higher elevations in the mountains of Kenya. It produces a qualitatively similar flavour with perhaps a touch more acidity. A tasty combination of smooth flavours with a touch of Kenyan acidity.
