Melatonin is an important neurohormone found in humans and many other living organisms, isolated from the pineal gland of cattle in 1958.
In humans, melatonin can be synthesized in the pineal gland, as well as in the liver, kidney, gastrointestinal system, adrenal gland, heart, genital glands, uterus, platelets, leukocytes, natural killer cells, and other immune system cells.
Eighty percent of the melatonin circulating in the human body is synthesized in the pineal gland, while the amount of melatonin synthesized in other organs is very low, so it does not contribute significantly to blood circulation.
One of the most important factors in regulating human sleep is exposure to light and darkness. Melatonin, which initiates the onset of sleep and improves sleep quality, plays an active role in regulating the biological clock and circadian rhythm (such as the sleep-wake cycle, heart rate, blood pressure, body temperature, hormone release, metabolic activities, personal performance, and mood changes), begins to be synthesized in darkness, and its synthesis comes to a halt with the arrival of light.
Melatonin synthesis begins with darkness. Melatonin synthesis varies with age.
