Iron deficiency anemia is a type of anemia caused by not having enough iron in your body. It's usually caused by blood loss, poor nutrition, or poor absorption of iron from foods.
Anemia refers to a condition in which the number of red blood cells in your blood is lower than normal. Red blood cells carry oxygen throughout your body and carry carbon dioxide (a waste product) to the lungs for excretion.
Anemia can also occur when your red blood cells don't contain enough hemoglobin. Hemoglobin is the iron-rich protein found in red blood cells that carries oxygen throughout the body.
-Those at greatest risk for iron deficiency anemia include infants, young children, women, and adults with internal bleeding.
-When you lose blood, you lose iron. Iron deficiency anemia occurs when your body doesn't have enough iron stored to replace the lost iron.
-Your iron needs increase if you don't regularly consume meat, poultry, fish, and eggs, or if you are pregnant.
- Even if your diet contains enough iron, your body may not be absorbing it properly. This may be due to a previous bowel surgery or intestinal diseases such as Crohn's disease or celiac disease.
- Medications that reduce stomach acid can also impair iron absorption.
- Infants and young children need large amounts of iron for their growth and development.
-Children who drink too much cow's milk may be at risk of iron deficiency anemia. Excessive milk consumption can also negatively affect iron absorption in children.
-Children with lead (a heavy metal) in their blood may also be at risk of iron deficiency anemia. Lead can reduce the body's ability to make hemoglobin.
-Women, due to blood loss during monthly menstrual periods.
- Iron deficiency anemia occurs in approximately half of pregnant women. This can increase the risk of premature birth and low birth weight babies.
- Iron deficiency anemia can occur in people undergoing kidney dialysis. This is due to blood loss during dialysis. Furthermore, the kidneys cannot produce enough of the hormone needed for red blood cell production.
- If you follow a very low-fat diet for a long time. Or if you consume a diet rich in high-fiber foods. Excessive fiber intake can slow down iron absorption.
Symptoms of iron deficiency:
- the most common symptom is feeling weak and tired.
- anemia can also cause shortness of breath, dizziness, especially when standing, headaches, cold hands or feet, pale skin, gums, and nails, and chest pain.
- if you don't have enough red blood cells, your heart must work harder to circulate the diminishing amount of oxygen in your blood. This can lead to arrhythmia, heart murmur, enlargement of the heart, and even heart failure.
- Signs of anemia in infants and young children include loss of appetite, slowed development and growth, and behavioral problems.
- brittle nails, swollen and sore tongue, cracks at the corners of the mouth, enlarged spleen, and frequent infections.
- They may crave non-food items such as ice, lime, ash, and paint.
Restless legs syndrome (RLS) may occur in people with iron deficiency anemia. RLS is a disorder that causes a constant urge to move the legs. This urge to move the legs is often accompanied by strange and unpleasant sensations in the legs. People with RLS often also have difficulty sleeping.
